Smart Traffic Systems That Respond to Real Conditions.
Smart Traffic & Mobility is MAGIC’s approach to integrating controller logic, sensor inputs, communication and monitoring for intersection operations.
MAGIC combines controller logic, sensor inputs, networked communication and operational software to help intersections operate more responsively while retaining reliable fallback behaviour.
The operational problems this addresses
- Fixed-time plans that cannot follow variable traffic demand.
- Junctions that need coordination with neighbouring junctions, not isolated timing.
- Field installation constraints: cabinet space, power, ducting and roadside works.
- Degraded sensor or network conditions that must not stop the junction from operating safely.
- Operations teams that need monitoring and reporting, not just a working cabinet.
What does MAGIC integrate?
- Traffic controller and cabinet logic
- The signal controller and cabinet wiring that decide stage sequences, timings and safety interlocks.
- Sensor and camera inputs
- Vehicle detection from loops, radar or camera-based sensors feeding real demand into the control logic.
- Real-time communication
- Networked links between junctions and the monitoring side, engineered for roadside conditions.
- Adaptive and synchronised logic
- Control strategies that adjust timing to measured demand and coordinate green waves across junctions.
- Monitoring and reporting
- Operational visibility of junction state, faults and performance for the people who run the network.
- Field commissioning coordination
- Site survey, installation coordination, testing and commissioning under live traffic constraints.
How do the control modes differ?
- Fixed Time
- The junction runs a pre-set timing plan. Predictable and robust, but it cannot react when real demand differs from the plan.
- Fixed Time Vehicle-Actuated
- A fixed plan is the base, but detected vehicles can extend or skip stages within limits — for example holding a green slightly longer when traffic is still flowing.
- Adaptive Vehicle-Actuated
- Timing continuously adapts to measured demand at the junction, allocating green time where vehicles actually are instead of where a plan assumed they would be.
- Synchronized Adaptive Vehicle-Actuated
- Adaptive junctions are additionally coordinated with each other, so a corridor of junctions works as one system — balancing local demand against progression along the route.
Key takeaways
- MAGIC integrates the full chain: cabinet logic, detection, communication, adaptive strategy and monitoring.
- Four control modes cover the practical range from fixed plans to synchronised adaptive corridors.
- Safe fallback under degraded conditions is a design requirement, not an afterthought.
- Delivery includes field commissioning, documentation and support — not equipment supply alone.
